Did you know your clutter has meaning?  This may be a new concept for you.  You may think all those belongings around you mean nothing, but on the contrary it’s packed with a lot of emotions, pain and many times unresolved trauma that gets held in the space as well as in your body.

In Feng Shui we say, “As Within, So Without,” meaning, what is going on within you shows up in your life.  It will show up in the people you surround yourself with and the places you spend time in.

In general, a cluttered space is a cluttered mind.  It can also manifest as excess weight, which commonly is unexpressed emotions or an attempt to protect yourself from others or situations you don’t know how to deal with or want to deal with.

The Bagua

Depending on where your clutter resides will tell you a great deal about it as well.  In Feng Shui, we use a tool called, The Bagua. Translated it means, eight sided arrangement.  Each area represents a specific area of your life, such as:

  • Career/Life Journey
  • Knowledge/Spirituality
  • Family/Ancestors
  • Wealth
  • Fame/Recognition
  • Relationships
  • Children/Creativity
  • Helpful People/Travel

When your clutter is in one of these areas specifically, it is expressing what is hidden in your subconscious mind.  This map is one of the tools I use to help me diagnose a space and where my client needs support and help balancing their life.

Other key areas to keep in mind when assessing your clutter are: your attic, basement, closets, storage units, and garages both attached and detached.

Attic/Basement

When your attic is filled with unnecessary items you are unconsciously blocking your future.  The opposite happens when your basement is cluttered and represents you are hanging on to the past.

So, if your basement or attic is loaded with a whole bunch of items you no longer need, love or have a use for it’s time to get in there and let stuff go… When we let go of things we no longer need we make room for the new and greater blessings to come in.

When you allow FEAR to stop you from letting go and moving forward it represents a lack of faith and trust that everyone and thing you need will come to you at the exact time you need it.

Storage Areas

Closets, storage units and garages represent the subscious.  Depending on where they reside in your home or on your property will tell you the area of your life it is affected the most.  For example, if your coat closet is located in your career area and it’s bursting with coats you never wear or don’t fit you, it can represent you not doing what you love or what you are meant to do.

You are playing it safe and staying where it is comfortable. It also represents you not making room for what you want to come into your life.  Ask yourself, how is this serving me?  What fear am I giving into by playing it safe?

Perhaps you are hanging onto a coat or jacket, just in case you need it.  Maybe someone special gave it to you and you are hanging onto it to hang onto them? Or it’s in good condition I can’t just let it go!

Well, think of it from this perspective instead. Wouldn’t you rather give it to someone who could really use it, and love it? When you do this it raises your vibration and the person’s who you gave it to.  Thank it for how it served you and then release it to the person who needs it more than you.

Cycles and Flow

It’s a cycle of energy, giving and receiving.  When you stop the cycle you stop the flow.  When you stop flow you create stagnation.  Stagnation in the home creates stagnation in the body. Stagnation in the body creates dis-ease.

In nature, everything is a cycle. The more we connect to nature and reflect on the cycles around us we become connected to the rhythm of life and then we can truly live.  Feng Shui on a deeper level is about following the cycles and rhythms of nature.  It’s an inner knowing that we are all connected.  That every object animate and inanimate is vibrating energy that influences what it comes in contact with.

Move through your space and feel it.  Really feel it. Close your eyes and use your other senses.  Notice where you feel open and alive and notice where you feel closed and afraid or shut down. Talk to your home. Let it tell you what it wants and needs to be balanced. Do this and you will begin to shift the energy in your space and ultimately within you.
